How the committee is run

The MLC operates under a written constitution, most recently adopted on 7 July 2024. It sets out the committee's characteristic, membership, management and meetings.

Membership

Membership is open to persons who:

Profess the Muslim faith and declare, knowingly and voluntarily, the Shahada without addition or change.
Believe in the Qur'an as the final Revelation of Allah, and in Muhammad ﷺ as the final Prophet and Messenger — the Seal of the Prophets.
Volunteer their time and skills in a genuine, conscientious and disciplined manner to further the aims of the MLC.

Each member has one vote and is eligible to stand for election onto the committee.

Management committee

The MLC elects a committee of between 3 and 20 members who direct the policy and management of the group.

Elected to serve for one year, after which they may stand for re-election.
A chairperson and a secretary are selected from amongst the committee.
The chairperson has a casting vote in the event of a tie.
The committee may co-opt members to bring in the skills needed to deliver its aims.

Meetings

Regular meetings

Held as often as necessary and at least three times a year — on the first Sunday of March, July and November. The quorum is three members.

Annual General Meeting

Held every year in July, with at least fourteen days' notice. The AGM elects the committee, reports on the year's activities, and considers amendments to the constitution.

Extraordinary meetings

An EGM may be called at the chairperson's discretion, or by written request of at least ten members — convened within 21 days, considering only the business specified.

Principles

A values-led organisation

Non-profit making and philanthropic in character.
Non-party-political and non-sectarian.
Committed to non-discriminatory practices and equal opportunities.
Governed transparently, with changes decided by the membership.

Amending the constitution

Where amendments are necessary, members are informed in writing and given the opportunity to consider and vote. An amendment is made where there is a simple majority. Any part of the constitution may be amended, added to or removed at the AGM, with proposed changes circulated in advance.
