The Muslim Liaison Committee (MLC) is a non-profit charitable organisation dedicated to promoting a greater understanding of Islam and supporting the educational development of Muslim children and young people.
Working in partnership with mosques, schools, statutory bodies, community organisations and volunteers, the MLC provides support towards a more inclusive approach to education and training.
Our purpose
Through collaboration, advocacy and community engagement, we help create learning environments that promote equality, respect and opportunity for all. Founded to advise the education authority on issues affecting Muslim pupils, the MLC has grown into a trusted voice on curriculum design, chaplaincy and the everyday needs of Muslim children in school.
Contributing to the locally Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education and producing lesson materials and fact sheets that help schools teach about Islam accurately and respectfully.
Supporting the Muslim community through chaplaincy provision, guidance for schools, and a circulation network that keeps mosques and families informed.
Tackling misconceptions about Islam and Muslims through education, training and interfaith collaboration with Muslim and non-Muslim organisations alike.
Our aims
A brief history
Established in the 1960s by Dr Yusuf Qamar to advise on issues such as halal meals in schools, the committee's role broadened over the decades to shaping the Religious Education curriculum and supporting pupils across the city.
